How to write a good essay
Writing a good essay is a skill which will be useful at different stages of your academic life. Of course every essay is different but this is a good general guide, and it also is a very good guide for our scholarship essays (hint hint!).
Start with thinking about what the question is asking you. Is it yes or no, is it asking for an opinion, is it provocative? Take some time and think about the question. Highlight key words and phrases, so you can focus on them in the body of your essay.
Next, think structure. Here, hamburgers are your friends!
Hamburger Top Bun: Introduction
Start with stating your opinion
Show some understanding of the context of the essay
Clarify any words if you think that is needed
Patty: Main body
This is the longest part of the essay
Show your arguments, and make it clear that research and thought has gone into them
Each point should begin with reference to the original question. This shows you are thinking about the overall essay question throughout
Stick to P.E.E.L to stay focused throughout the main body: Point, Evidence, Explanation and Link
Remember the length of your main body will vary depending on the word count!
Hamburger Bottom Bun: Conclusion
Sum up the arguments made in the main body of your essay
Never introduce new ideas in the conclusion
Once you’ve written out a draft, think about your writing overall. Keep it clear and concise. Maybe show your essay to someone and get their honest feedback on it!
Happy essay writing!
